On Tuesday, central Ohio Congressmen Pat Tiberi and Steve Stivers joined 177 of their Republican colleagues in voting down aid for victims of Hurricane Sandy who live in New Jersey, New York and Connecticut. Only 49 House Republicans had the decency to vote for this supplemental appropriation to assist those in need. It is disgraceful that politicians like Tiberi of Genoa Township and Stivers of Upper Arlington seem to have politicized human suffering. That was not the case in 2005 with Katrina, when Congress acted in only 10 days to assist those suffering in Louisiana and Mississippi, two states that voted for President George W. Bush the year before {keyword} . Can it be coincidence that these three n {keyword}ortheast states voted for President Barack Obama in 2008 and 2012? Even New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, a Republican, has criticized members of his party for their opposition. In all of this, we owe a debt of thanks for newly elected Congresswoman Joyce Beatty, D-Jefferson Township, for doing the right thing and voting to help people regardless of their ZIP code. My family and friends in New Jersey would like to thank Beatty for her {keyword} compassion and support, with no thanks for the likes of Tiberi, Stivers and their slow-acting caucus.DENIS SMITHWesterville

1dayagoObama's first four years in office then vs. nowBy Mark Murray, Senior Political Editor, NBC NewsIs the nation better off than it was four years ago?The answer largely depends on the statistics you pick. With President Barack Obama be louis vuitt {keyword} on bags ginning his second term, there are plenty of numbers suggesting that the country is on more solid footing than it was when he first took office on Jan. 20, 2009.NBC's Mark Murray and Domenico M {keyword} ontanaro take a look back at President Obama's promises kept and promises broken in his first term. The Dow Jones Industrial average is up 5,550 points since then. The economy is growing (instead of contracting). Consumer confidence has nearly doubled (though it remains below where it was before the Great Recession). And a larger percentage of Americans believe the country is headed in the right direction (but a majority still think it s on the wrong track). |
